(2002)

So why attempt this record?

The hospital radio station needs a high profile fundraising event in its 30th year of broadcasting and it was suggested by a member that we could not only break the world record, but also raise vital funds for the station’s future existence.

Where is the money going?

In July 1999, HRB suffered a devastating fire which put the station off air for 18 months. To get the station up and running again, the radio station used up all of its financial resources. Operating a radio station requires us to meet certain running costs and we are also looking forward to implementing exciting plans for the future.

In 2002 we are hoping to raise enough funds for a number of planned projects:

Currently we are in discussions with the hospital authorities to move the radio station to new accommodation within the hospital. We would convert the space required into two studios and an office. Money raised initially would be spent on new equipment for our main broadcast studio one.

The hospital is currently finalising details of which company will be chosen to provide a bedside communication and entertainment service as part of a commitment included in the NHS Plan. Every bed will be provided with a TV/Radio/Telephone bedside unit. Hospital radio will be available on the system totally free. We need to be able to connect to this new service.

We would also like to follow other hospital radio stations and install a Low Powered AM transmission system. This is very expensive to install (£13,000) but would enable us to transmit our programmes to areas of the hospital complex such as Parklands, the new ARK Centre, St Michael’s Hospice and the nursing accommodation.
