FINAL TOTAL... £1704.36 HRB took on the task of cycling, on static exercise bikes, the distance from Basingstoke to the most northerly hospital radio station in the UK. We did it in the foyer of Basingstoke Sports Centre in Festival Place in Basingstoke. The event started at 9am on Friday 22 July 2005, with Vernon Pearce and Brian Starman looking after the first few hours with others helping out as well. Even Steve Combes, Sports Centre Manager got on his bike and cycled for us. By the afternoon we were making good progess helped along by various people who came up to us wanting to take part. During all this time, we were also collecting money from those passing by. Progress was good on day two as the cycle ride continued to Caithness. HRB left messages for stations in Liverpool to tell them we'd passed by and continued to be in contact with Caithness FM. Those that helped out during the day included Kestrel FM evening show presenter (and ex HRB member) Steve Fox, along with two other former HRB members Neale Adams and Paul Streeter. At the end of the day, we'd done 466 miles. Day three started well with lots of members willing to help out on the bikes. Alan Minto, John Curry, Neil Ogden and Sarah Beattie were later joined by President of the Hospital Broadcasting Association June Snowden. Progress continued ahead of schedule and it was at 2.30pm exactly when Alan Minto and Dave Leonard rode the final miles and reached Radio Remedy at Caithness. Alan had ridden well over 100 miles in total during the weekend. HRB has a lot of people to thank for helping us out. First of all Steve Combes and all the team at the Sports Centre including Julie and Michelle from the Swimming team who cycled for us on Friday. Thanks to all the other non HRB members for coming to do some cycling. These included Douggie Lawson who did a very large number of miles on Saturday and Sunday, and of course HBA President June Snowden who joined us on Sunday morning. Also thanks to all the people who have sponsored us and also given us money in our collection tins. We know of over £900 so far and not all the money has been counted yet! That figure includes £250 from AWE in Aldermaston. Thanks to all the stations along the way that we linked up with including those in Perth and Inverness and of course Caithness FM who took a big interest in what we were doing. They recorded an interview with Neil Ogden for use later on. And finally thanks also to Morrisons for providing us with much needed bottled water to drink over the three days.
