It started on 24 March 1991 and has run for over 1500 shows since. Neil Ogden’s Sound of Sunday will mark 35 years on the air with a special birthday show on 29 March.
The show is on the air live every Sunday afternoon with an array of features and of course lots of requests, nowadays integrating Residents’ Requests which started 10 years ago.
10 years ago the show broadcast live from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to mark the 1000th edition and presenter Neil Ogden was the last person to do a media interview on the original London 2012 running track.
Also in 2016, the show produced an award nominated documentary telling the story of Saturday morning TV “It Started with Swap Shop” which was the culmination of 10 years of interviewing those who were part of BBC Saturday morning TV over the years. The promo for this programme won Bronze at the 2017 National Hospital Radio Awards.
During the pandemic the show was broadcast live remotely and presenter Neil Ogden won the bronze award for Male Presenter of the Year in 2022.
The show also includes HRB’s Weekend Prize Draw with the winner being chosen at random and the prize being delivered during the show.
The show almost certainly the longest running show on any hospital radio station with a one presenter for the whole time it has been on the air.
The birthday special will be extended to a live 5 hour show that will include the draw with 3 winners being chosen. There will also be friends of the show choosing their favourite songs from the last 35 years, and there will be a whole hour of music played entirely on vinyl, something that happened nearly all the time in 1991.
